US leaves and rejoins the Paris Climate Agreement

We congratulate Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to the the 2020 US presidential election victory!

On 4 November the Trump administration left the Paris Climate Accord. When Biden enters into office on 20 January he can easily and presumably will make the US rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement.

He can make the decision himself through a so-called presidential order, this is how the agreement is designed. All he then needs to do is send a statement to UN Secretary-General António Guterres that the US wants to return to the Paris Agreement and send a plan for the country’s national climate commitments. Then it takes 30 days before the US joins. That means that at the end of February, the United States will once again be part of the agreement in which almost 200 of the world’s countries have promised to work to limit climate change and, among other things, keep global warming well below 2 degrees.
