Democratic transition in Sudan halted by warlords, one fearful of ICC extradition

After the military coup in 2021, where the progress of UN experienced civilian prime minister Abdalla Hamdok was put to halt, Sudan has been ruled by two generals, Abdel Fattah al-Burham and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, both with ties to the conflict in Darfur and the latter to the infamous Janjaweed militia. Recent days of violence are attributed to these two generals’ respective military factions that are in a clash for power in a new civilian ruled system that was due to commence last week. Dagalo is particularly threatened by a democratic development in Sudan because of his actions in war torn Darfur where he most likely committed human rights crimes and therefor risk an extradition to the International Criminal Court (ICC), according to Swedish news paper DN.
