UN Cybercrime Treaty under way

The current negotiation document for the expected soon to be UN Cybercrime Treaty has met heavy criticism from human rights defenders after the fifth negotiation session in April in Vienna, Austria. Modern law in the field of cybercrime is of course important but the present draft goes far beyond that goal with implications on freedom of expression, privacy, unjust surveillance and even cyber security research, partly due to vague language of proposed chapters, is at viewpoint stated by critics in an article published by The Register. The UN Cybercrime Treaty cooperation builds on the existing Budapest Convention and is scheduled to be delivered to the UN General Assembly for consideration in January 2024.
